As the snow melts through the spring in Yellowstone National Park, the park begins to reawaken for the quiet winter. For the last couple years Lindsey, the Inn on the Creek Innkeeper, has celebrated her birthday with a pilgrimage to Yellowstone. It is amazing to see the varying snow depths that persist into May change year to year.
When entering the park from the southern entrace, the road parallels the Lewis River. This river has carved an impressive revine that it snakes through. Lewis Falls is the first highlight you will come upon followed by Lewis Lake. This lake’s winter ice is just breaking up in spring and is beautifully bobbing along the surface.

Lewis Falls, the first highlight from the southern entrance, are a spectacular sight right off the road.
Next stop Old Faithful!

Old Faithful erupting with blue skies. The heat of the thermal activity in this area melts the snow well before the rest of the park.

The massive fireplace inside the Old Faithful Lodge is an impressive sight. In spring the lodge is free of crowds and enjoyable to explore.
Continuing on from Old Faithful, you are in geyser basin with many smaller geysers and colorful warm pools. Be sure to stop at the many pull offs in this stretch and explore this area.
Heading north en route to Mammoth Hot Springs catch a view of the gorgeous Gibbon Falls. This portion of the drive the road follows the Gibbon River.
Continuing on past Gibbon Falls on the Upper Park Loop Road will bring you to Mammoth Hot Springs.
The lodge and cabins at Mammoth Springs Area are some of the first to open for spring. Great place to spend the night!
Finish out your Spring in Yellowstone trip by visiting the Falls of the Yellowstone River!
