Jackson Hole Winter Activities- Cross Country Skiing

Jackson Hole Winter Activities

Jackson Hole may be famous for its downhill skiing, but we have a lot to offer by way of cross country skiing, as well!  One of our favorite Jackson Hole winter activities here at the Inn is cross country skiing.  Whether you prefer to stick to groomed courses, or break trail and explore, there’s a trail for everyone!

We have many great options in the area for nordic and skate skiing on groomed courses.  Your best resource for up to date grooming reports is JH Nordic’s website.  Here you can find information on courses that offer lessons and rentals, such as Teton Pines, Turpin Meadows, and Grand Targhee.  They also post reports on roads and trails in the area that are closed to everything but skiing and snowshoeing traffic for the winter.

Keep an eye out for tracks! Elise spotted these wolf tracks right on the road in Grand Teton.

Getting Geared Up

If you would like to venture out on your own, but don’t have your own gear, there are shops in Jackson that can help you out.  Skinny Skis and Teton Mountaineering, both located just off of the Town Square in Jackson, rent cross country equipment.  They offer skate, classic, and backcountry cross country setups at comparable prices.  The staff at both shops are extremely knowledgeable and can help you get into the proper equipment for whatever you may have planned for the day.

Choosing Your Trail

If you would like to venture into nature but aren’t quite up for breaking your own trail, there are roads and trails that are maintained and groomed for cross country skiing. There are many options, but the most popular in the area is the Teton Park Road in Grand Teton National Park.  They groom the stretch of the road from Taggart Lake Trailhead to Signal Mountain road.  The park grooms twice a week for skate and classic skiing, weather permitting.  You can start from either end of the road.  Taggart Lake trailhead is about a 30 minutes from town, while Signal Mountain is roughly 50 minutes by car.

Cross country skis are a great way to access locations for other activities, like ice fishing.

If you have a wider set of backcountry cross country skis, Jackson Hole is your oyster!  There are many places you can explore in the park, from Phelps Lake to the Jackson Lakeshore.  Feel free to ask our staff for recommendations for one of our favorite Jackson Hole winter activities!
