Jackson Hole Western Activities

Here in Jackson Hole, we are known for being “The last of the old west.”  It is easy to see why while you’re walking from Inn on the Creek to the Town Square with its elk antler arches.  Most buidlings have an obvious western flare to their architecture, and the sidewalks are actually boardwalks downtown.  If you are looking to experience some Jackson Hole Western Activities for yourself while in Jackson, we have some recommendations below for doing just that.

The most quintessential “Jackson Hole” item on this list is the Jackson Hole Shootout.  The Jackson Hole Playhouse has been putting on this longest continuously running gunfight in the U.S., for 50 years.  The 10-15 minute show takes place at 6pm sharp every day of the week except Sunday, all summer long.  We recommend stopping by one of the various shops around the Square to grab a treat to enjoy before dinner while you wait for the show to start.  It’s okay to have some popcorn, candy, or icecream before dinner when you’re on vacation!

If you’re in search of a western-style dinner, look no further than the chuckwagon.  A chuckwagon dinner is prepared outside on grills and in cast iron dutch ovens.  Dinner is enjoyed al fresco, as well.  There are a few outfitters that put on Chuckwagon dinners.  These include Bar T-5, located in the town of Jackson, Bar J, located about a 15 minute drive from the Inn, and Spring Creek Ranch, located about a 20 minute drive from the Inn.  All of them offer an impressive dinner spread prepared chuckwagon-style.  They also feature some type of western-themed entertainment, from a guitar-playing cowboy to a full western show.  In addition, Bar T-5 and Spring Creek Ranch take you on a wagon ride before dinner to enjoy in the scenery.

Last, but certainly not least in western flare, is the Jackson Hole Rodeo.  This real-deal rodeo is held every Wednesday and Saturday night from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends.  They hold additional rodeos on Friday nights in July and August.  The rodeo starts at 8pm, and usually runs until about 10pm or 10:30pm.  They have concessionaires serving hot dogs, popcorn, and alcoholic beverages, so you may choose to dine at the rodeo.  Events include bull and bronc riding, calf roping, and barrel racing.  All ages compete in most of those events, and it is quite impressive to see a young girl or boy steer a horse quickly through those barrels!

Reading this, reminds me of the wonderful tour that we had last summer with you, Elise, meandering through the remarkable town of Jackson and experiencing all that the Yellowstone area has to offer to the “Old West’ in all of us.. Makes me want to come back, hopefully soon.
